I saw the end of the Florida’s college football win over Oklahoma last night. I hadn’t seen a minute of college football since Woody and I watched the end of a very entertaining USC-Oregon State game a couple of years back at Vivandres’ place, and I was amazed at how dinky and slow these teams–surely, other than USC, the best in the country–were.

I seriously don’t understand how anyone watches college football. The whole time I found myself thinking “the Detroit Lions would murder these guys.” If it wants me as a regular viewer of its football product, the NCAA needs to put its student athletes on a rigorous steroid regimen.

  1. Watching the game I was thinking that the Trojans would have spanked either of those teams as well but, alas, we’ll never know for sure. Anywho…

Robert Kendrick would murder Serena Williams, yet I still enjoy watching the longer rallies in women’s tennis… it’s like a different game. In college football too, the plays take longer to unfold and develop.

Part of the fun of college football comes from the disparity of talent as well… not between teams (though that can be fun too if you’re a USC fan), but between players. Watching Reggie Bush return punts in college was entertaining because he was just so much better than the opposing coverage teams. He could make moves (like running the wrong way until he was clear) that in the NFL would just be a bad idea.

Not that it isn’t also entertaining to see the best go up against the best. It’s just different.

Then again, I don’t understand how people can watch high-school football, so what do I know.

Yeah, racquet sports get dumb when they’re all serve and no volley, but I can’t stand watching them either way.

Now *playing* them on the other hand…

One could say the same thing about a chess match between morons versus between grandmasters!

Actually, I suppose if they have one of those chess timers that Woody brought to English class in high school, that’s sort of an equalizer there.

I’m sure high school sports are even harder to watch. I’m also sure it makes a huge difference having some sort of connection–real or imagined–with one participant or team. I never feel that way about any sporting match I can think of unless I’m playing it myself, although I’m sure that’ll change when Michelle signs Alex up for soccer.

Stick around in San Diego long enough for a tennis match next time you and Vivan come down. You guys can be Trojans and Michelle and I will be Beavers.
